Sprinkles, Sprinkles, Sprinkles!!!

I love my sprinkles, I love looking at them lined up sitting on the kitchen window sill and I love having the Peas pick their favorite kinds to put on top of their morning oatmeal. I'm really fond of their retro glass jars, they come in two different styles and I just refill them with the standard sprinkles from the supermarket. I'm not sure where to buy them online or retail other than I got mine at T. J. Maxx the end of last summer and a few more this spring and my Aunt in who lives in D.C. had some too! So if you like, check out your local Maxx.

Soda, it's for babies too!

This Seven-Up ad from a 1956 LIFE is simply amazing, now I know why I remember drinking it as a toddler and probably baby too! And here's a few more from the 1950's.

It would have been more shocking if they put a nipple on the bottle.

Food Fridays: Maple Oatmeal Bread

This was the first time I successfully made bread that was edible!!!! It's a bit on the sweeter side and makes a great breakfast bread, sprinkle a little salt or add a pat of butter and it's was perfect on the side with a pasta dinner.

** I replaced 1 1/2 cups of the all purpose flour with finely ground quick oats**

My little garden

I tried so hard to make my garden grow I planted in late March watering every day even giving them organic plant food and hand pollinating their little flowers with a q-tip since all our bees seemed to be away vacation. I read everything on the internet I could and was determined this year was going to be different even with a different yard and help from friends it was the little garden the could couldn't. My yellow squash bloomed 20 times over and nothing, my cauliflower grew 5 inches high then nothing, my cantaloupe tried but no flowers and as for the potato I had high hopes for them. They grew big and flowered and flowered the leaves grew bigger and bigger and then after three months started to die and from what I read that means time to harvest.. So in the pouring rain full of excitement I dug and dug and dug...... and dug......

And here's what I got. How can you not laugh, have you ever seen potatoes so small???  I grew not small potatoes, not baby sized potatoes but more like fairy sized potatoes. I think the kiddos are going to be a bit hungry after dinner tonight.

Happy Monday....

Isn't life delicious!

yogurt kisses

This past weekend was one of many firsts....

it was the first time I tried to drive a stick and failed miserably,

and the first time I got behind the wheel of a vintage VW Bus,

it was the first time I had a tray of raw oysters spill into my lap (I caught the $300 worth of super smelliness and all I got was a thank you, how about I'll dry clean you clothes and pay for a new camera bag now that they smell hideous and I never want to use or wear them again),

the first time I tried doing a DIY project I knew nothing about and had it turn out surprisingly well without any major self inflicted injury,

the first time I gave my kids magic shell ice cream topping and they loved it! Don't we all

and the first time I didn't have anyone to visit on Father's Day the kids went with theirs, I don't have a father in-law anymore and my Dad was 1500 miles away.

it was also the first time I realized that growing older has it's perks like no longer getting embarrassed for being your own unique and crazy self and asking have you seen my sunglasses?....when they're on your face.

But I did find this awesome sign on the wall at Wintzell's Oyster House in Orange Beach that pretty much sums up my life right now.

Making Progress...

It's definitely coming along and has the feel of my inspiration piece (The Anthro Amelie Sofa) all it needs is the back stapled on and the double welting to finish off and hide the nearly 2000 staples!

Things I love...

I love rice pudding.
I love that floor lamps are coming back in style.
I love that I left the house in rain boots when it's 85 and sunny out.
I love my kids.
I love that the settee is starting to look like a piece of furniture again.
I love planning a vacation.
and I love my Dad .... Happy Father's Day!

Day ?????? is it done yet?

So it would stand to reason if you pull several hundred staples out you would need to put several hundred back in and since I'm not so handy on the electric staple gun several hundred has now turned into 900 and counting. I haven't even put the back fabric on  so another 500 should do if you add the half that end up laying all over the floor I think they call it skill or lack of.

Using the Amelie sofa as inspiration (from Anthro) I needed to add some wood slats to the back so I could staple the material to make the double pillow look which adds so much more to depth and visual interest I'm loving it and even though I was a tad very apprehensive about my ability to pull it off  it looks fabulous and was relatively easy, just another row of staples. Cutting the wood to fit however is another story and my dream of being a furniture builder might just have to stay a dream, at least I didn't resort to duct tape but it was bad.

Our Den turned work area/no kids zone and staple mine field should be back to normal in a few, crossing my fingers there's still the double cording to make.

Day seven: Everything's better in Black!

I am so relieved to finally get to this point, after mending the legs with some more filler and sanding down the frame I applied a gloss black spray paint, thought it doesn't look that shiney probably since I have no idea how to use spray paint but I'm sure it will look great once I put on the Martha Stewart metallic glaze tomorrow.

The kitty cat claw marks are gone!!!!! And yes that's newspaper on the settee I'll get to the fabric later this week but the kiddos thought it was funny to joke that I finally decided to cover it with that being a newspaper photo gal and all.
Notice anything about these Children's books on the shelf at our local thrift store today???
Somehow "Drunk Before Noon" fits in between Bedtime for Bunny and Snow White.

Day Four: Mending a broken a leg

Before
After
This settee came with a broken leg and claw marks galore but after a couple layers of wood putty, some sanding and a couple coats of paint I'm hoping for a full recovery.

And the rest of the day was spent pulling staples 227…228…229 you get the point.

Coming next is the fun part!!! spray painting. I'm still on the fence about the fabric but I found a great bargain on some Ikat now if I can make it work with the room.

Inspiration

 found over at Bijou Boheme

Day Three: Pick me

My original choice I've decided isn't going to work out so after 2 hours at the fabric store I brought home these and quite frankly I don't know if I like any of them. Picking out a pattern to go on the settee is much hard than I could have ever imagine it would be easier to just point and say I want that sofa the fabric choice already made by some factory exec and waiting for a new home. So were off to the last of 5 fabric shops in town, let's hope for the best.

Ikat or florals, reds or blues, maybe pink! Who knew I was so indecisive.

Push my Button

There may not be any easy button in life or even for this reupholstering project I've started but we did manage to find a different kind of button over the weekend at the Exploreum, one I hope isn't used to often and I think that's Little E's reaching for the burp button in the background.

Day two of the reupholstering project was a wash literally I spritzed the settee with vinegar water to try and dissolve the nasty cigarette odor I'm crossing my fingers that it works. Next will be using wood putty to fill in the cat scratched, sanding and spray painting the frame.

Project: Reupholstering Day 1

Here it is my settee in all it's cream-ness, cat clawed legs and I can't forget the overwhelming smell of cigarette smoke, yuck! But if you look past all it problems I'm hoping to turn this garage sale find from a beast into a beauty.

Isn't that a beautiful detail on the back of the settee, I just love it! But underneath it's cream exterior was a 100 years of some really bad floral material. I think the official count of it's reupholstering history was 4 times.

It's going to get really ugly before it gets any better. I found this fabric at Hancock Fabrics on sale this week 40% off !!!!!!! It was a close match to my inspiration piece from the Anthropologie's Amelie Sofa fabric from a few years back. In the end I'm hoping to save close to $3000 for the same look, cross your fingers and wish me luck I have never attempting anything like this, ever!

 The end of Day ONE.

A view from the Hammock

This is what my peaceful Sunday afternoon looked like for two minutes.

And then it looked like this...

For about 5 minutes until the sky started to fall for almost three hours we were not expecting rain not today and not since the last time it rained was way back in March so the rest of our afternoon look like this...

My vegetable garden is very happy~!!!!!
